Selective Admissions Majors

While the UNC Greensboro application makes you eligible for admission to the university as a whole, there are certain majors which have additional selective admission requirements or guidelines.


Direct Admission to Nursing School

We’re proud to offer Direct Admission for first-year students seeking to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Students can be admitted to the program right away, instead of waiting for a competitive application process after completing prerequisite courses. UNCG is the first UNC System university to implement this streamlined new process for our high-demand BSN degree program. This is selective major with limited spaces available. MAJORS WITH SELECTIVE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS 

All applicants to UNCG must submit the Undergraduate Admissions Application to be admitted to the university, regardless of their intended major. The following programs have additional requirements or procedures. 

Studio Art (BFA), including all concentrations  

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, all application terms 

Admissions Process: Students are admitted to the university where they complete the School of Art’s Foundations coursework and develop a portfolio of work that is reviewed as part of a competitive application for formal admission to the program/concentration. 

All dance majors 

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, Fall and Spring terms only 

Admissions Process: Students must complete a supplemental application and audition as part of a competitive admissions process for majors.  

Acting (BFA) and Musical Theatre (BFA) 

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, Fall term only 

Admissions Process: Students must complete a supplemental application and pre-screen audition to be considered for admission to this competitive program.  

Design and Theatre Technology (BFA) and Technical Production (BFA) 

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, all application terms 

Admissions Process: Students must interview with faculty prior to enrollment for this competitive program. Summer and fall students will be invited to an on-campus interview session that is typically held in February, and faculty will also make virtual and alternative options available. Spring students will receive communication from faculty about arranging an interview prior to enrollment. 

Theatre Education (BFA) 

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, all application terms 

Admissions Process: Students are granted provisional admission to the major during the first three semesters, then must apply for secondary admission to the School of Education (see Education major requirements below).

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, all application terms 

Admissions Process: Students must complete certain requirements to be admitted to upper-level courses, including completing specific courses, earning a 2.7 GPA on lower-level coursework, and achieving a minimum passing score on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Praxis Core Combined 5752).

BIRTH-KINDERGARTEN EDUCATION PROGRAM

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, all application terms 

Admissions Process: Students must complete certain requirements, including completing specific courses and earning a C+ or better, maintaining an overall 2.6 GPA to progress in the program, having an overall GPA of 2.85 for admission to Teacher Education, and achieving a minimum passing score on the Professional Assessment for Beginning Teachers (Praxis I). 

Special Education: TA to Teacher Pathway program (ONLine)

Eligibility: Transfer students, Fall term (only for 2026, summer term only starting in 2027)

Admissions Process: Students must first be admitted to UNC Greensboro and then meet all program-specific requirements to be considered for admission. Applicants must be currently employed as a North Carolina K–12 Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant, hold a completed associate degree, meet minimum GPA requirements, complete or have a plan to complete the Praxis Core, and submit a recommendation from a school administrator. Admission to UNC Greensboro does not guarantee admission to the program, as all application materials are reviewed by program faculty, who will issue a separate admission decision.

Interior Architecture (BFA) 

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, Fall term only 

Admissions Process: Students must complete a supplemental application to be considered for admission to this competitive program. 

All BM programs, and BA/music minor students who wish to be considered for one-on-one instruction on their instrument. 

Eligibility: First Year and Transfer students, Fall term only, Spring term 

Admissions Process: Students must complete a supplemental application, upload prescreen materials if applicable, and complete an audition to be considered for admission to this competitive program.

Nursing (BSN) – Direct Admission 

Eligibility: First Year students only, Fall term only 

Admissions Process: Students must apply to UNCG by the Fall Early Action deadline with a minimum 3.5 high school GPA and will be automatically considered for admission to this highly competitive program. Students not selected via direct admissions can still be admitted to UNCG as part of our Nursing Pathways program and then apply to the upper division of the Nursing major during their second year by completing certain coursework, maintaining a minimum GPA, and completing the ATI TEAS test. Admission is extremely competitive as the number of applications typically exceeds the number of available spaces each year. This is a selective major with limited spaces available, confirmation is first come first serve.

RN-to-BSN 

Eligibility: Transfer students only, must already be a registered nurse (RN), all application terms 

Admissions Process: Students apply directly to UNCG and must hold a current, active, unrestricted RN license in North Carolina or in a state covered by the multi-state Nurse Licensure Compact before enrolling in the required Nursing courses and maintain licensure at all times while enrolled in the Nursing courses. Bachelor of Speech Pathology and Audiology 

Eligibility: All student types; New, Transfer and Second Degree students.

Admissions Process: Students admitted to the SPAU major at UNCG must complete a secondary application based on the number of college credit hours completed by May 15 of the current academic year.

  • New and transfer students with fewer than 55 credit hours will work with HHS Advisors until the spring semester of their sophomore year, then complete the CSD Secondary Application.
  • Students with 55 or more credit hours must apply to and be admitted to both UNCG and the CSD Program before enrolling in 300-level and above SPAU courses.

Secondary Application Requirements: Applicants must have completed at least 55 credit hours, meet the minimum GPA requirement, and complete the required prerequisite courses. The secondary application deadline is May 15th for fall admission only.
