A map of North Carolina, with the major cities Asheville, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Wilmington highlighted with yellow stars.
Drive two hours west for a hike through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Head three hours east for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Our town is the halfway mark between Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

Nestled in the state’s Piedmont region, Greensboro is truly at the heart of North Carolina, so it’s the perfect launchpad for a day trip or weekend getaway.

As North Carolina’s third-largest city, Greensboro also offers every reason to stay put. The Piedmont Triad area is home to 10 other four-year colleges and universities which infuse the city with energy, a vibrant nightlife, and countless options for cultural outings.

Arts and entertainment

Even with a population of 280,000, Greensboro boasts a small-town feel. Off campus, experience life as a local with a walk along Downtown Greensboro’s quaint Elm Street. You can browse an array of restaurants, breweries and coffee shops; an independent bookstore; clothing boutiques, gift shops, and more. Grab lunch to-go and enjoy a picnic on the lawn at LeBauer Park, which draws friends from across the city.

Our city is known for serving as a catalyst in the civil rights movement. At the Civil Rights Center and Museum, you can sit at the original Woolworth’s counter where young African American students staged one of our country’s first sit-ins.

Greensboro was named for Nathanael Greene, a major general in the Revolutionary War. History buffs come to the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park for the annual reenactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.

Greensboro celebrates the cultural arts. Take in a show at the intimate, downtown Triad Stage theater.  Make plans to attend concerts in the park and celebrations like the North Carolina Folk Festival.

Shopping

Just two miles from campus, the outdoor, tree-lined Friendly Shopping Center houses retailers such as Anthropologie, Barnes & Noble, The Apple Store and REI. Also, at the Four Seasons Town Centre, you’ll find the traditional mall experience, with stores such as Dillard’s, Forever 21, and H&M.

Sports and recreation

You’ll love Greensboro’s moderate climate because of our mild winters and spectacular springs and falls. Greensboro’s meandering system of parks and peaceful green spaces is the best place to enjoy every season. Whether you’re looking for solo or group recreation, more than 170 parks, gardens, and facilities give you plenty of options. Make plans for golf, swimming, biking, volleyball, or an easy walk through the interconnected greenways. Greensboro Coliseum, just a mile from campus, is the home court for UNCG’s men’s basketball team and hosts a variety of sporting events and concerts throughout the year. Baseball fans enjoy watching the Greensboro Grasshoppers play in their downtown stadium, and soccer fans cheer for the Carolina Dynamo.
