Shameeka W.

Major: Professions in Deafness (B-12 Deaf and Hard of Hearing teacher licensure)

Graduation Year: 2018

Hometown, State: Williamston, N.C.

My personal motto is: You do what have to do, until you can do what you want to do.

My goals are: To graduate with honors, complete a master's degree at UNCG in TESOL (English as a second language), participate in an international study experience in China, become a teacher, teach abroad and, most importantly, make a difference in the lives of my students.

I selected UNCG because: We have a top deaf education program in the state, excellent student-to-professor class ratio, and after experiencing a campus tour and meeting such helpful and encouraging faculty members, I knew that UNCG was the perfect fit for me.

My best UNCG moment: Acceptance into the UNCG Teacher Education Fellows, along with having the opportunity to meet my scholarship donors, Bob Jordan and Sarah Cole Jordan.

My biggest surprise at UNCG: Being featured on the UNCG website with [UNC system] President Spellings after presenting projects created in the School of Education's SELF Design Studio.

My favorite place on campus: The SELF Design Studio in the School of Education. I enjoy this space because creativity is welcomed and ideas envisioned in my mind become a reality. Also, the faculty in this space are very encouraging and helpful during the brainstorming process.

On the weekends: I enjoy taking walks in the Country Park and/or curling up with a good book.

My favorite class: "American Sign Language IV," because our professor created an environment where it was safe to make mistakes, and being able to explain complex health topics with my hands was amazing!

I am involved in: UNCG Teacher Education Fellows, Lloyd International Honors College, SOE Marshals, Kappa Delta Pi International Honors Society, and National Society for Collegiate Scholars Honors Society.

My favorite food on campus: Yum Yum

Favorite thing to do in Greensboro: Jump around with friends at Airbound Trampoline Park.

If I could have a superpower, it would be: Teleporting from place to place on campus.

My one piece of advice for prospective students is: Get to know members of your cohort and make friends! Everyone has something unique to offer. Many times these friends have been a source of strength and encouragement throughout each passing semester. I am comforted in knowing that I have created lifelong bonds and friendships.
