Meet Our Spartan Guides

SamayaSamaya R.

Major: Political Science (pre-law concentration) and Communication Studies

Anticipated graduation: 2019

Hometown: Charlotte, N.C.

Motto: You will never influence the world by being just like it; be the change you wish to see in the world.

Goals: To live a life that pleases God and fulfills in every aspect: academically, professionally, emotionally, and physically.

Why I chose UNCG: Upon visiting UNCG for the first time, it felt like home. I knew this was the place for me, from genuinely warm and welcoming faculty, staff, and students to the beautiful and diverse campus with esteemed faculty dedicated to ensuring I receive a quality education.

Best UNCG moment (so far): When I was selected to become an Honors Ambassador. This was the first leadership role I had on campus, and it propelled me to pursue other opportunities. During my first visit at UNCG, an Honors Ambassador, Sarah, left a lasting impression on me, and I wanted the opportunity to do the same (much like my experience with my Spartan Guide, James, during my first tour)!

Biggest UNCG surprise (so far): On Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, I attended presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign rally at the old student rec center. At the conclusion of her speech, I was able to get a selfie with her and shake her hand. A few weeks later, I had the opportunity to see President Barack Obama speak at Greensboro's White Oak Amphitheater. As a lover of all things government, law, and politics, to see two prominent political figures during an election year was surreal!

Favorite place on campus: Taylor Garden, behind the EUC and the Alumni House. It's a hidden gem on campus and the perfect place to study during spring! The water fountain, perfect array of flowers, and the trees make for a beautiful, peaceful, calm, and serene getaway.

On weekends: I like to watch Netflix, relax, get ahead on work, and attend university sponsored events on campus.

Favorite class: "Government and Its Critics" (HSS 106). This was a small, discussion-based, first-year seminar class that fostered involvement, critical thought, and application. This class challenged me and pushed me and resulted in me having better study habits, as well as bolstering my confidence in my ability to tackle initially challenging tasks.

Student involvement: In addition to being a Spartan Guide, I also am a Full University Honors student serving as an Honors Ambassador; a Student Reflection Leader; and a junior senator and legislative committee chair in the Student Government Association.

Favorite campus eats: The pomegranate green tea smoothie with soy milk from the Barnes & Noble's Cafe.

Favorite Greensboro activity: Visiting local shops and museums, walking around downtown, seeing the artwork around town, and trying new places to eat.

If I could have a superpower, it would be: Teleportation; this would enable me to travel the world, see historic sites, and get to and from places very quickly and cost-effectively.

My advice for future Spartans: Seize every single opportunity! Get involved, attend campus events, and get to know faculty, staff, and other students. Also, don't procrastinate on your work — start early and work on tasks bit by bit so it's not overwhelming all at once.
