Former Students

Former students are those who have previously attended UNCG during a regular academic term (not including summer session) without completing a degree. Students who completed a degree at UNCG or another institution should visit our Second Degree page.

The following individuals must reapply for admission to UNCG by the posted deadline for the semester or summer term for which they wish to return:

  • a former student who has been suspended or dismissed* for academic or disciplinary reasons
  • a former student who has not been enrolled for two consecutive terms (excluding summer)
  • a graduate of UNCG.

Readmission of former students is not automatic and students must meet prevailing admissions standards to be eligible to return to UNCG. This policy only applies to undergraduate degree seeking students.
*Students who have been academically dismissed must have a Return from Dismissal Appeal approved before being readmitted and may not return during a summer term.

Application process

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive all application materials by dates posted. (Please visit Instructions and Deadlines for more information.) With the exception of students who left UNCG under academic dismissal, UNCG accepts former students for fall, spring, and summer semesters. UNCG operates under rolling admission for former students, so the earlier you apply, the better. You will be notified in writing of our decision.

Please note:

  • Check with the Cashier's Office about any financial and/or loan holds.
  • Check with Student Affairs if you left under disciplinary suspension.
  • Returning students will need to see an academic adviser before registering for classes.

What if I left UNCG under academic probation?

Students who wish to return to the university after a semester of academic probation are not required to reapply. Upon returning to UNCG, students must submit transcripts from any coursework taken while on probation from UNCG and also must adhere to the academic standing policy in the Undergraduate Bulletin for the year they were admitted. Please note that academic standing policies do change. For more information about the requirements of students on academic probation, visit the Students First Office online  or call 336-334-5730.

Academic suspension is for one semester. Once this time period is over, students who left UNCG under academic suspension must reapply to UNCG.

What if I left UNCG under academic dismissal?

Academic dismissal is for one year (excluding summers). Once this time period is over, students who left UNCG under academic suspension must reapply to UNCG. In addition, these students must have Return from Dismissal Appeal approval before being re-admitted and may not return during a summer term. For more information on the appeal process and returning from academic dismissal, visit the Students First Office online or call 336-334-5730.
