Former Students

Former students are those who have previously attended UNCG (without completing a degree) during a regular academic term, summer session not included. If you did complete a degree at UNCG or another institution, please see our Second Degree page.

Admission requirements

If you have attended another university since leaving UNCG, you must meet prevailing admission requirements. Students must clear all holds from their record, if applicable. If you were not in good academic standing at the time you left UNCG, please refer to the academic standing information below regarding readmission.

Application process

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive all application materials by the dates listed. (Please visit Application Instructions and Deadlines for more information.) We accept former students for fall, spring, and summer semesters. UNCG operates under rolling admission for former students, so the earlier you apply, the better. You will be notified in writing of the decision.

Please note:

  • If you were academically dismissed, you must submit an appeal. (See below for further details.)
  • Check with the Cashier's Office about any financial and/or loan holds.
  • Check with Student Affairs if you left under disciplinary suspension.
  • Returning students will need to see an academic advisor before registering for classes. Admitted students may contact their department of interest to set up an advising appointment.

Can I return if I left under academic probation?

If you leave the university under academic probation and choose to sit out a semester, you must reapply to UNCG. If you attend another post-secondary institution after leaving UNCG, you must meet prevailing admission requirements. Upon returning to UNCG, freshmen (students with fewer than 30 credit hours) must earn a cumulative GPA of 1.75 or higher. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors need to earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Failure to meet the required GPA levels will result in academic suspension. Please call the Students First Office office if you have questions about what constitutes academic good standing.

Can I return if I left under academic suspension?

Academic suspension is for one semester. Once this time period is over, you must reapply to UNCG. If you attend other post-secondary institutions after leaving UNCG, you must meet prevailing admission requirements. Upon returning to UNCG, you must earn a minimum GPA of 2.3 each semester until you have restored academic good standing. Formerly suspended students who wish to return also must agree to participate in a program sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Student Excellence during the first semester upon return. Failure to meet the conditions of this program will result in immediate dismissal. For more information on academic good standing, contact the Students First Office.

Can I return if I left under academic dismissal?

Former UNCG students who left on academic dismissal must also petition the University for permission to return by submitting an "Academic Dismissal Appeal." Contact the Students First Office, 061 McIver Building, (336) 334-5730, for more information on the appeal process. Formerly dismissed students who successfully petition to return must agree to participate in a program sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Student Excellence during their first semester upon return. Failure to meet the conditions of this program will result in immediate dismissal from the term. Formerly dismissed students who are readmitted will be notified about the details of this program when their appeal is approved.
