Goals of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures:

  • To provide practical training in the basic skills of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing
  • To promote those values in the liberal arts tradition that derive particularly from the study of language, literature, and culture
  • To increase understanding of language as structure and process
  • To provide an enlightening encounter with cultures and modes of thought different from one's own

What's unique about Spanish at UNCG?

  • The accelerated master's program allows the student to receive a B.A. in French or Spanish and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in approximately five years
  • Departmental Lecture Series open to undergraduate students

Careers:

  • Teaching in public and private middle and high schools; teaching at the college level (graduate studies required)
  • Other graduates pursue careers in translating, publishing, and businesses with international interests
  • President of TM Baker Company, Inc. (Spanish graduate)
  • Director of Bilingual Education for the New York State Schools (Spanish graduate)
  • Other graduates now work for the U.S. Department of Defense, the YWCA in Warren, OH, and the Greensboro Housing Authority

Graduate Schools:

Students in the romance languages have successfully completed graduate programs in French or Spanish at institutions such as Yale University, the Pennsylvania State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia, the University of Tennessee, and the Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA.
