What's unique about English at UNCG?
- Writing classes with 25 or fewer students.
- Separate "Honors in English" option for majors admitted to UNCG's Honors College.
- One of the oldest creative writing programs in the United States, which benefits undergraduates through fiction and poetry readings by distinguished visiting writers and through classes taught by our award-winning creative writing faculty. In 2011, Poets & Writers Magazine named UNCG's master of fine arts program among the top 50 in the country.
- Free writing tutorials at the University Writing Center, a service housed and staffed by the English Department.
- Faculty members who frequently receive grants from such prestigious organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Academic Clubs and Organizations

- English Society: Past activities include participation in a service project at Glenwood Library, poetry readings by society members and other students, and various social functions.
Student Opportunities
- Study abroad opportunities at eight universities or colleges in the United Kingdom.
- UNCG student publications, such as the Carolinian and the Coraddi, provide student publishing opportunities.
- Opportunities to earn credit and gain teaching experience for English majors with strong writing skills, who may apply to volunteer in the University Writing Center.
- Students may earn course credit and invaluable job experience through English 401, Internship in Journalism and Editing, and English 402, Internship in English Studies.
- Some area organizations that have recently advertised for interns include The News and Record, Sky Magazine (in-flight magazine of Delta Airlines), the Greensboro Opera Company, local TV station WFMY, Allosaurus (children's publisher), the Natural Science Center, the American Red Cross, the United Arts Council of Greensboro, and the Walt Disney World College Program. They also may arrange for internships in another part of the country.
Graduates/Careers
English majors often continue to graduate school for further education. Our graduates have attended Carnegie-Mellon University, Duke University, the University of Georgia, UNCG, the University of South Carolina, and the Shakespeare Institute at Stratford, England.
Careers of our graduates include: President of Girl Scouts of America, Archivist for the State of North Carolina, News Anchor Reporter for WFMY-TV in Greensboro, Associate Editorial Producer at Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., Vice President for Wachovia Corporation, Attorney with Bronson and Associates in New York, Group Manager at the Center for Creative Leadership.
Professional Organizations and Accreditation
- Licensure BA program accredited as a state and national English Education Program.
- Sponsorship of two national journals: The Greensboro Review and English Literature in Transition, 1880-1920.
- Member of the Association of Departments of English, the South Atlantic Association of Departments of English, and the Associated Writing Programs.
