What's unique about African American Studies at UNCG?
The program's interdisciplinary curriculum focuses on the study (music, artistic expressions, literature, historical and social experiences) of people of African descent in America and other parts of the world.
The degree prepares students to work in diverse settings—such preparation is a must for 21st century graduates.
AFS faculty focus on student success and provide mentoring, career advice, and networking opportunities.

Student Opportunities
The African American Studies Program has worked with the International Programs Center to establish a study abroad exchange with the University of Botswana in Gaborone, Botswana. AFS majors are encouraged to participate in a study abroad program. Visit www.uncg.edu/ipg for more information on our program and www.ub.bw to learn about the University of Botswana.
Majors are encouraged to apply to become an AFS Ambassador, a competitive leadership program. The program is partnering with local organizations to offer internships for career preparation.
Graduates/Careers
- The AFS major prepares students for leadership in the African American community, in particular, and in American society, in general, and it is an excellent foundation for graduate and professional study.
- Career options include teaching at secondary and higher education levels, medical/healthcare, non-profit/community organizing, artistic production, and more.
- Graduates of the program have pursued careers with healthcare, banks, non-profit organizations, education, etc.
- Many graduates extend their degrees by pursuing post-baccalaureate degrees in African American Studies, literature, history, law, medicine, and other areas.
Professional Organizations and Accreditation
African American Studies is part of the National Council of Black Studies.
